Rosendo “Russ” Menchaca, 90, of Northwood, Ohio, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2021. He was born February 19, 1931 in San Angelo, Texas.
Putting down roots in Toledo, Ohio, he married Ernestine (Garcia) Menchaca on June 21, 1952. Despite not having a father figure of his own, Russ was truly a family man, raising six children of his own with his wife of 69 years. He loved his family and Catholic faith more than anything.
Russ worked for and retired from Acklin Stamping Company in Toledo. He also proudly served his nation in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
An avid sports lover, Russ coached baseball for Good Shepherd Catholic Church in East Toledo, where his teams won multiple league championships. During that time, he also mentored many young men who to this day still look up to him. Russ also was a baseball and softball umpire, calling games well into his early 70’s. His favorite teams were the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns and The Ohio State Buckeyes.
Russ enjoyed the simple things in life—black coffee, sweets and smoking a pipe in his younger years. While he was the quintessential hardworking American man, Rosendo was also proud of his Mexican heritage. He enjoyed listening to Mariachi and eating good Mexican food.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ernestine Menchaca; brother, Steve Menchaca; sons, Russ Menchaca, Randy Menchaca, Mark (Kelly) Menchaca; daughters, Annie Menchaca-Bratton, Maria Menchaca; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother Julia Menchaca; brothers, Martin Menchaca, Louie Menchaca; and son Bob Menchaca.
His family will receive friends at the Castillo Funeral Home, 1757 Tremainsville Rd. Monday from 5-8pm. and Tuesday at St. Thomas Aquinas Church 729 White St. after 10 AM followed by Funeral Mass at 11 AM.
