Obituary

Michael (Mike) Andrew McCloskey, Age 64, passed away Sunday, November 15, 2020 after a prolonged illness. Mike was born on October 20, 1956, the son of Jerry and Joan (Polster) McCloskey. Mike is survived by his prior wife Nancy (Schmit) McCloskey, and his brothers and sisters; Patrick (Lisa) McCloskey, Kevin (Kathy) McCloskey, Brian (Andrea) McCloskey, Jacquelyn McCloskey, Jennifer Kiss, and Melissa McCloskey, and many nieces & nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Michelle McCloskey.

Mike lived on Nevada Street, in Toledo until he was 3 years old, when the growing family moved to Walbridge, Ohio.  He and his parents were founding members of St. Jerome Church, established in 1964. Mike attended the newly built St. Jerome School and was a member of its first graduating class in 1968. Mike attended Cardinal Stritch High School in Oregon, Ohio, excelling in track and field, and football.  He played in the City Championship Game (The Shoe Bowl) and was awarded Toledo All-City honors as a safety his senior year. In 1991, Mike married the love of his life, Nancy, spending 30 years together.

Mike was always good with his hands and loved creating things of strength and beauty.  So it was fitting that his first career was as a brick mason. Following this first chapter of his career, Mike went to work for his lifelong friend Mike Scheanwald performing professional cabinet making.  In 1988, this led to work with Crown Store Equipment, where he fortuitously met Nancy. Mike experienced much as this involved significant traveling doing the installation for the store fixtures.  Traveling took him nationwide.   After leaving Crown, Mike went on to work with SW Store Equipment. From there, Mike managed maintenance for an Extended Stay hotel, finally moving on to Pro- Pack Industries in Toledo, from which he retired in June 2019.

Nancy would say that Mike’s carpentry talents were very handy when we they bought their house – he always introduced creative ideas on how they could modify and improve it.

His favorite place to vacation was the Florida Keys. Mike loved that area and always looked forward to it. Nancy recounts they had some really fun times there.

Mike was an at-home guitarist, and although he loved all types of music, he was particularly fond of the blues, and his life-long idol, Eric Clapton. He was recognized by family & friends as very skillful, despite never having a lesson.

He was also a fan of all types of racing – a love of which he shared with his brothers, Brian & Kevin, and nephew, Kent. Mike also dabbled in coin collecting and was very proud of his inventory and loved conversing about it.

Mike most loved to fish, whether fresh or salt-water, from a boat or the shore, he was his happiest and most at peace with a rod in his hand.   Later in life, his favorite fishing was standing along one particular spot at the edge of his sister Jennifer’s pond – a location that was dubbed “Uncle Mike’s Point”.

His family and friends will remember Mike as having a wry wit and dry sense humor – always able to make us laugh – even in the most difficult of situations. He will be sorely missed.
