Fred C. White of Toledo passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, late in the afternoon on March 27, 2019 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was born on June 2, 1947 in Indianapolis to Donald and Marjorie White. He moved to the Glass City at a young age, and graduated from Maumee High School in 1965. He studied business at the University of Toledo and served 5 years in the Ohio Army National Guard. It was during this time that he would find his calling as a salesman, laying the foundation of his legacy as both advisor and friend to many.
Fred proved to be a sales powerhouse early in his career, awarded as a Top 3 producer in the US for Balfour Jewelry. Recognizing a unique opportunity in 1982, he began training with brokerage firm Merrill Lynch. This was the beginning of an illustrious career as a wealth manager that continued for nearly 37 years. Every single client whom he counseled will remember Fred as intelligent, honest, and remarkably dedicated. He genuinely cared about the well-being of those who entrusted him, as well as their families. Working with the financial markets and advising his clients - many of whom he considered close friends - brought him daily joy and fulfillment. He was generous yet humble, exhibited outstanding work ethic, and was an expert in fostering long-term relationships. Fred continued serving his clients as a loyal Wells Fargo advisor until his passing.
Fred was married to Valerie Knapik, his one and only, for almost 40 years. In 1983 their first son Chad was born, followed 3 years later by Matthew. As a family they were fortunate to be able to travel the world together, most notably Mexico and the Caribbean. They, along with friends, will remember him for his incredible charm and loving, selfless nature. Fred was a master of hospitality, a man of class, a "gentleman's gentleman," and strongly believed in chivalry and gratitude. He took great pride in instilling these values in his two sons, who will forever remember him as their "Biggest Fan." Fred enjoyed golf with the usual suspects at Brandywine, theater at the Stranahan, action flicks and hockey games with his boys.
Fred is survived by his wife, Valerie, their two sons Chad (Jodi) and Matt (Jenn), granddaughter Kinslee, mother-in-law Christina Knapik, sister-in-law Jenifer Zalecki, nieces Krystyna and Danielle, niece Lynne and nephew Scott, and many loving family members and lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Marjorie White, father-in-law Ted Knapik, and sister Dee Cassingham.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends spread the memory of his generosity by donating to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or charity of their choice. There will be a private celebration of Fred’s life for family and close friends, details TBA.
